This comprehensive course offers detailed instructions on how to safely navigate waterways, focusing on both International and Inland (USA) rules. It aims to equip recreational boaters with essential knowledge to minimize conflicts with other vessels. The course covers what actions to take, what to avoid, and the appropriate timing for each maneuver. A valuable knowledge check is included, which can be beneficial when demonstrating compliance to your insurance provider or legal counsel, if necessary. The insights presented are drawn from the extensive experience of a former Royal Navy Warship-Driving Officer.

This course is tailored for all recreational boaters, regardless of vessel type—power or sail—and size ranging from 15-feet (4 meters) to 150-feet (45 meters). It alleviates the stress associated with right-of-way scenarios and eliminates the necessity of adapting to the misguided beliefs held by some boaters regarding navigational hierarchy.

While there are no shortcuts to mastering these rules, the course spans a little under three hours and encourages multiple viewings for thorough understanding. Each pertinent rule is articulated in its complete legal form, allowing participants to grasp their significance without requiring rote memorization. The course offers clarity on more complex rules while emphasizing their application to individual boating practices through rich instructor-led insights.

Meet your instructor, David Morris. A distinguished former British Royal Navy warship driving Officer and yacht captain, David qualified for the Royal Yachting Association Yachtmaster Offshore Power and Sail Captain’s license in 1988. His first captaincy was established that same year in Spain, commanding a 90-foot yacht through critical maritime routes. Following his enlistment in the Royal Navy in 1991, David graduated from Britannia Royal Naval College where he completed extensive maritime training across a range of deployments. He received specialized navigator training with commendable performance in Collision (Navigation) Rules examinations. Serving as Officer of the Watch on multiple vessels, David culminated his career as Senior Bridge Watchkeeping Officer aboard HMS Newcastle, navigating through some of the world’s busiest shipping lanes while rigorously maintaining proficiency through monthly written examinations on Collision Rules.

Taking this course is a proactive step towards cultivating a more enjoyable and less stressful boating experience.
